Norwegian police have arrested three men on suspicions they were plotting terrorist attacks.
Officials say they believe the men have ties to al-Qaeda and a terrorism network that may be responsible for planning failed attacks in the United States and England, according to the New York Times.
In an English translation provided by the BBC, Janne Kristiansen, the head of Norway's Police Security Service, said the men, all in their 30s, had been under investigation for "some time." She identified one of the men as a Norwegian citizen originally from China; another, from Iraq, and the third, from Uzbekistan.
All three lived in Norway, one as a Norwegian citizen, and the other two as permanent residents in the country, she said. The men have not been identified by name. Two were arrested in Norway and the third was arrested in Germany early Thursday.
According to the Associated Press, U.S. and Norwegian officials believe the men were building peroxide bombs for use in future attacks.
